Chernobyl Children’s Project
Building this website was a big task. A big task, that was actually rather fun! Hundreds of users, multiple profile pages, a shopping cart, donation pages, many different page templates, email sign ups, dynamic drop down menus etc…
I used WordPress as the content management system for this site. I had to install several plugins to get the admin area right. For example, ‘Manage Your Posts Only‘, ‘Register Plus‘ and ‘Role Scoper‘. These plugins help to turn WordPress from a brilliant blogging platform into a full blown CMS. Another fantastic plugin that I use for most of my websites is ‘flutter‘. Flutter allows you to create custom write panels, so you can have ‘Posts’, ‘Pages’, ‘Shopping Cart Item’, ‘Contact Entry’ and so on. You can also have custom fields within a write panel. This is what really helps to turn WordPress into a CMS.
With this website having a lot of users, from pro to novice, I used Jing to create a series of video tutorials to show everyone how to operate the CMS. I made videos explaining how to log in, adding pictures to posts, managing the email lists etc… Jing is a great tool for taking video screen shots as it’s quick, easy and free!
